Mental Illness and Poverty

How is poverty a disadvantage for people with mental illness in developing countries?

«Mental health as a development priority«

The United Nations has established the Sustainable Development Goals to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all countries. These goals address global challenges thousands of people face every day, including poverty. Poverty is a risk factor for a negative outcome among mental ill people globally. Sadly, poverty has harsh effects on society, affecting people’s health and way of living. Throughout the years, and especially during the last decade, it has been proved that poverty and mental disorders can be related in difficult social environments, mainly in those of low and middle income countries. Factors like insecurity, hopelessness, social change, and risk of violence in these countries may increase the vulnerability of the poor to common mental disorders.

DTCS Mental Illness & Poverty is a web page that analyzes how poverty is a disadvantage for people with mental disorders in low and middle income countries. In this web page, we focus on how mental illness and poverty can be associated, studying different aspects of poverty and their possible causes, and how those aspects may affect the mental health of those living in poverty. Additionally, through research and surveys, we focus on several factors that may lead to poor mental health and whether or not poverty plays a role. Taking this into account, the main focus of our page is how these factors affect the awareness, treatment, and support for mental illness in low and middle income countries.

Finally, we hope our research helps to prove that intervention for helping people with mental illnesses is a development priority in low and middle income countries in order to improve the future of those who suffer from mental disorders and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
